The City of Sumner’s contractors are chip sealing Thompson Street from SR 410 to Cherry Avenue and 63rd Street Court East, east of Parker Road (areas shown in orange below).  Work is expected to start on Wednesday. This process adds a new layer to roads, greatly extending their functional life.  The work will not shut down roads but may cause delays for drivers.

Chip-sealing is a process through which liquid asphalt is sprayed onto the existing pavement and immediately covered with gravel (chips) that is compacted and embedded into the asphalt by giant rollers.  After the new surface cures, any loose gravel is swept away and a special sealing layer is placed on top.  This process is done in stages.  Sometimes concerned citizens call partway through, worried that the project does not look “done,” which, of course, it isn’t!
