Fair warning! Sumner Police will be running Click It or Ticket emphasis patrols May 14-June 3. But, meeting us is not the worst risk you have for riding or driving without a seat belt. The statistics from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are sobering.
Excuse One: “But none of my friends are using theirs…”
57% of passenger vehicle occupants aged 18-34 killed in crashes in 2014 were unrestrained.
Excuse Two: “It’s late and traffic is light.”
In 2014, more than half of passenger vehicle occupants killed at night weren’t wearing seat belts.
Excuse Three: “I’m in the back seat. Do I really need one?”
Yes. Sitting in the back doesn’t excuse you from using a seat belt. 58% of back-seat passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in 2014 weren’t bulked up.
Excuse Four: “Cars are safer now with airbags and technology, so I don’t still need one, right?”
Wrong. From 2010 to 2014, more than half of passenger vehicle occupants killed weren’t wearing seat belts. It still makes a big difference.
