Did you know that Whitworth University was founded 125 years ago here in Sumner? It opened February 20, 1890, in the block surrounded by Alder and Cherry Avenues and Academy and College Streets (now Park Street). In fact, the college’s predecessor, the much smaller Sumner Academy, is what gave Academy Street its name. The college’s 1892 catalog boasted that “The moral tone of Sumner has a reputation above that of any city or town on the Pacific coast. It is free from saloon influences and is surrounded by very intelligent, active and enterprising people.” We aren’t going to argue with (most) of that!
