UPDATE FOR WEEK OF AUGUST 21:
Drivers who use State Route 162 near Sumner will encounter overnight single lane closures during the week of Aug. 21. The lane closures are necessary so contractor crews can continue a pavement preservation project.
Crews will close the southbound lane of SR 162 near 80th Street East to just south of 96th Street East, Monday through Friday from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following day. One-way alternating traffic will be in place. Drivers will follow a pilot car through the work zone.
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is repaving four miles of SR 162 (Valley Avenue/Orting Highway) from the SR 410 interchange in Sumner to 96th Street East. WSDOT will also be doing bridge repairs and improving curb ramps around the interchange. Work begins July 17 and is expected to last into early fall. WSDOT anticipates alternating one-way traffic Monday through Friday, 9 pm to 5 am (basically, right after and before the Orting commutes start). Pilot cars will escort traffic through the construction zone. There will also be overnight ramp closures during that time frame and detours for pedestrian users.
