As Sumner schools head back into session, it’s time for students, parents and all drivers to brush up on the basics to keep students safe, whether they’re walking to school, riding a bicycle or riding the bus.

Walking: wear bright colors; look both ways before crossing the road; don’t get distracted by phones and friends; use crosswalks or even lighted crosswalks where possible (and push the buttons to activate the lights).

Riding a bicycle: wear a helmet; ride in the same direction as traffic, and follow traffic signs and signals; yield to pedestrians; never use electronics while riding.

Drivers: obey the school zone speed limit; stay alert for surprise pedestrians/bikes; brush up on the rules for following/passing school buses.
