The Sumner Police Department is giving away free vehicle steering wheel lock devices to help prevent auto thefts in Sumner. These anti-theft devices are free, while supplies last, by visiting the PD front window during business hours. If you are a Sumner resident, or park in Sumner to commute, please make an effort to obtain and use one, especially if you own vehicles that appeared on the NICB (National Insurance Crime Bureau) 2017 “Hot Wheels: America’s 10 Most Stolen Vehicles” list. Those vehicles, in order of most stolen, are

  • Honda Civic
  • Honda Accord
  • Ford Pickup-Full Size
  • Chevrolet Pickup-Full Size
  • Toyota Camry
  • Nissan Altima
  • Toyota Corolla
  • Dodge Pickup-Full Size
  • GMC Pickup-Full Size
  • Chevrolet Impala

Sumner had 68 auto thefts in 2017 AND again in 2018. Our goal is to reduce auto thefts 10-20% in 2019. In 2019, we will also be giving the devices to people whose vehicles were stolen and returned to help prevent them from being stolen again. And, thank you to the Washington Auto Theft Prevention Authority for giving us the grant funding to buy these devices.
