Our online utility bill pay system is currently down. The software vendor is looking into the issue. In the meantime, we will not proceed with shut-offs as scheduled for 2/28/23 and will update the timeline when the system returns. You can still pay by credit card, check or cash at City Hall.

What projects are required to have Design Review? New multi-family, commercial and industrial developments in Sumner are required to be reviewed per the City of Sumner Design and Development Guidelines.

Why is Design Review required? The Guidelines make sure that new development meets the goals and vision for Sumner as set forth in the City’s Comprehensive Plan. For example, to keep Sumner’s small town character, the guidelines include bringing buildings closer to the street, locating parking to the side or rear of the buildings and giving the area a friendly feeling that is not dominated by the automobile.

What is the process and who can I talk to about it? Your project should be reviewed by the Design Commission before you apply for a building permit. The Design Commission will hear and review proposed projects at their monthly meetings and make recommendations to the Director of Community Development. The Director then makes a final written decision on the project. Conditions and changes recommended by the Design Commission are taken into consideration and often adopted as required conditions in the final decision.

How and when do I apply? Use the online permitting system to apply for Design Review.

How much does it cost? There is no charge for design review.

How long does it take after the meeting to get a decision? Following the meeting, staff prepares a final decision – usually within two weeks of the meeting.
