National Night Out – a Message from Chief Moericke:
I was very pleased at the great turnout in Sumner for the annual National Night Out events. It was a great opportunity for neighbors to meet neighbors and interact with their local first responders. Thank you for those hosting gatherings and thank you for inviting us (police/fire). Together we are a safer, more vibrant community.

*PET OF THE WEEK – AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION*
My name is Violet, and I’m a very special pup that has captured the hearts of all the shelter staff and volunteers. And I hope that I will capture yours too!
I was rescued by Animal Control Officers on the 4th of July, after people reported seeing me running and hiding throughout the Puyallup fairgrounds. The officer was so nice, she climbed all the way under the wooden roller coaster to rescue me… and oh boy, I was nervous!
The officers think I may have spent my entire young life abandoned and alone at the fairgrounds, because I didn’t know how to be with people and my coat was in rough shape. But after a month at the shelter eating healthy food and learning how to play and snuggle, I’m doing awesome and ready to be adopted. And I am soooo excited and curious about every person I meet – I love people!
The shelter staff don’t know what type of dog I am, but they believe I am approximately 1 year old. I’m 25 pounds, so if you are looking for a very playful petite pup, then I’m a perfect match for you.
If you are ready to be a hero to this little lady and give her a forever home, please come visit Violet at the Metro Animal Shelter in Puyallup. We are open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., and are located a short distance away from the South Hill Mall.

5:10 update: the road is open!
Original post: Alder Avenue is closed in Downtown Sumner from Thompson to Academy due to a truck that didn’t quite clear a pole. Please use alternate routes and note Sound Transit buses will also be on detour where you don’t usually see them.

Former Sumner Police Chief Ron Hyland passed away on July 21st at the age of 92. Ron worked for Sumner PD from 1956 until his retirement in 1995. He served as Police Chief from October 1967 until his retirement and was one of the most senior police chiefs in the state. He was a long-time treasurer and board member of the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs and earned a lifetime WASPC membership. Ron also attended Session #96 of the FBI National Academy in 1974. Ron was the quintessential small town police chief, he knew everyone and everything about Sumner. He was very active in the community and had been a member of the Rotary Club of Sumner for nearly 60 years. He raised his family here and cared deeply about this community. We will remember Ron and his unwavering commitment to the city of Sumner. He will be greatly missed.

What is “blue”, fast, furry, and ready to race out of the shelter and into your heart?!?!? It’s us!
Our names are Sonic and Knuckles, and starting tomorrow we will be available for adoption at the Metro Animal Shelter in Puyallup, WA. We are 4 year old brothers, and can be adopted as a pair or as singles. Our previous family was no longer able to take care of us, so we were brought in the shelter with hopes that we could quickly find a forever family. Will you help make our stay here a fast one?
You can come play with us by racing over to the shelter Tuesday through Saturday anytime between 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The shelter is located near the South Hill Mall; directions and contact information, plus a list of all adoptable pets is available on our website at: https://metroanimalservices.org/search-pets/
