The trees on Main Street are getting an upgrade. The current trees are the wrong species for that setting. They naturally grow bigger than fits the location; they block businesses; and their red leaves “disappear” into the primarily brick buildings downtown. We will be replacing these trees with ginkgos, shown here, in planter boxes. These trees are more appropriately sized for the downtown setting, have pretty green leaves that turn bright yellow in autumn, and will be spaced to better respect neighboring businesses. The planter boxes will also reduce trip hazards. Our crews plan to start removing the current trees on Tuesday, January 21, starting with Main from Alder to Sumner Avenues. Businesses will experience temporary no parking next to the trees and some noise from the equipment. We’ll work to minimize impacts to businesses, opening up parking as soon as we’re done with a section. Thank you for your patience during this project.
