As temperatures continue to drop, don’t forget to take care of your pipes. Here are a few tips to avoid frozen pipes:
- Open cabinet doors to let warmer air flow around sink pipes in kitchens and bathrooms.
- Consider temporarily cancelling automatic thermostats that drop during the night. It will mean more power/gas used but it could be less expensive in the long-run than frozen pipes. (Hint: just remember to reset the thermostat when we return to more normal temperatures.)
- Cover/wrap outdoor faucets.
- Keep at least one faucet on a very slow drip.
And, if your pipes do freeze, call Public Works at 253-299-5740 to turn off your water at the meter for you. We’ve seen many homeowners already in a panic end up breaking their meter as well, which adds even more unnecessary costs.
