Sumner saw another encouraging year for public safety in 2025, with overall reported crime dropping more than 30% compared with 2024. At the same time, the Police Department’s clearance rate improved from 17.8% to 22.2%, meaning officers solved a greater percentage of reported crimes.
Some of the biggest improvements were in property crime:
- 🚗 Motor vehicle theft down 57%
- 🏠 Burglary down 24%
- 🛍️ Larceny/theft down 33%
- 🔨 Property destruction down 41%
- 💰 Reported stolen-property losses fell from $4.09 million to $1.83 million
There is still work to do. Aggravated assaults, sexual assaults, and fraud increased in 2025, and the Police Department has identified these as areas requiring continued attention.
Crime rates declined across all categories in Washington state in 2025, with reductions reported in murders, violent crime, and property crime. These findings come from the annual Crime in Washington Report (2025 Crime in Washington-compressed.pdf) compiled by the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs (WASPC). The report tracks crime and arrest data submitted by law enforcement agencies throughout Washington State.
