Our online utility bill pay system is currently down. The software vendor is looking into the issue. In the meantime, we will not proceed with shut-offs as scheduled for 2/28/23 and will update the timeline when the system returns. You can still pay by credit card, check or cash at City Hall.

Legal fireworks are allowed in Sumner only on July 4th from Noon to Midnight. Please follow these guidelines and recommendations to enjoy a safe holiday despite recent dry conditions.

Enjoy a Public Display

Please choose to watch a public fireworks display…or two….or three, instead of lighting your own. Professional shows are spread throughout the weekend in our region and offer a cost-effective and safe way to avoid the dangers of lighting fireworks.

Lighting Your Own

If you must shoot your own fireworks, legal fireworks are allowed in Sumner on July 4 from noon to midnight only. Illegal fireworks are never allowed.

Reporting Illegal Fireworks

Sumner Police try to respond to every fireworks complaint call we receive, but keep in mind this is a busy time for us with other life-safety calls. For reporting illegal fireworks, you can either report online from June 28th – July 7th, or call 253-287-4455. Please keep 911 clear for urgent emergencies.

As with any response, our officers assess the situation and use a combination of education and enforcement with the ability to issue infractions and seize illegal fireworks if they have sufficient evidence. This does not mean you will hear silence in Sumner; unfortunately, there hasn’t been a law made yet that people don’t feel the need to break.

Banning Fireworks

The State of Washington laws prohibit a city from banning fireworks without going through a lengthy process that provides at least a year notice in advance. We continue to monitor cities that try an outright ban, and they seem to be as loud, if not louder, than Sumner.
