Our online utility bill pay system is currently down. The software vendor is looking into the issue. In the meantime, we will not proceed with shut-offs as scheduled for 2/28/23 and will update the timeline when the system returns. You can still pay by credit card, check or cash at City Hall.

In 2024, the City of Sumner performed a comprehensive rate study for our water, sewer, and stormwater billing. As part of that effort, the City Council approved a new utility discount program for property owners who receive a property tax exemption through the Pierce County Assessor’s Office.

About the Discount Program:

  • Who Qualifies: Low-income seniors and/or people with disabilities who have qualified for a property tax exemption through Pierce County.
  • Discount Amount: A 25% discount on water, sanitary sewer, and stormwater base fees.
  • Automatic Enrollment: If you qualify for the property tax exemption, you will automatically receive the discount—no additional paperwork or action is required.
  • Review and Updates: The City of Sumner will review Pierce County’s active exemption list on January 1st and July 1st annually to ensure all qualifying properties are included.

Effective Date: This program begins January 1, 2025.

For Newly Qualifying Participants:
If you recently qualified for a Pierce County property tax exemption and do not want to wait for the next automatic update, you can contact the City of Sumner’s Utility Department at:
