Recently, our own Sumner Cemetery has experienced theft of some plaques and even markers made of bronze. While the destruction brought on by metal theft is not new, these are not just pieces of metal. Their loss is devastating to the families, to our cemetery staff and to our community. We are working with the families directly to inform them and get replacements as quickly as possible. The VA is paying to replace the missing markers for veterans and the city will pay for the rest.

What can you do?

1. If you know anything of these thefts, leave a message on our tip line at 253-299-5678.

2. If you are a family member of one of the missing plaques, please contact to cemetery about next steps at 253-299-5510. It is by no means all the plaques at the cemetery and while we know many may want to talk with us about their loved ones, we’re focusing on supporting the families directly victimized at this time

3. If you run a scrap yard or know someone who does, contact Sumner Police directly if you see markers or plaques coming in.

We are also evaluating and working to bring in additional security measures at the cemetery. We want our facility to be safe and secure but also accessible to those who need it to mourn and remember their loved ones.

Cyber Monday sales are on the horizon! Make sure you make safe purchases by following these safety tips:

1. Shop Only on Trusted Websites

Look for https:// and the lock icon in the address bar.

If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is.

2. Avoid Public Wi-Fi for Purchases

If you must use public Wi-Fi, use a VPN to protect your information.

3. Use Strong, Unique Passwords

Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for your shopping accounts.

4. Beware of Phishing Emails and Fake Ads

Don’t click on suspicious links or attachments claiming “emergency sales.”

5. Use Secure Payment Methods

Credit cards and services like Apple Pay or PayPal offer better fraud protection than debit cards.
