Tonight, May 13, at approximately 9:18 pm, a vehicle swerved on Valley Avenue in Sumner, nearly causing a head-on collision with a Sumner Police vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. The vehicle continued southbound on Valley Avenue, traveling in the northbound lane. Suspecting impaired driving, the officer initiated pursuit of the vehicle. The pursuit continued onto westbound SR 410 and then westbound SR 512. On SR 512, the suspect vehicle collided with two other vehicles. The driver of the suspect vehicle, a 36-year-old male, exited his vehicle, crossed all lanes and jumped off the highway overpass, landing in a private yard near Pioneer Ave in Puyallup. Central Pierce Fire & Rescue responded and transported the driver, who appears to have non-life-threatening injuries. From other vehicles struck, one male was transported to Tacoma General with non-life-threatening injuries. Per WSDOT, westbound 512 remains closed in this area. Vehicles should use alternate routes. Metro’s Major Collision Response Team will be investigating the incident.

This Police Week, we pause to honor the fallen heroes from our own community and beyond—officers who gave everything to protect and serve. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten, and their legacy lives on in the hearts of those they served. We stand with their families, their fellow officers, and all who continue the watch.
