Shining A Light on Domestic Violence, a message from Mayor Hayden:

There’s a lot of talk online and in the media about violence these days. And with good reason. I’m going to focus on the violence that happens quietly—too quietly—in homes throughout our society, including Sumner. October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. We’ve come a long way from the old “well, behind closed doors…” mentally, yet still, on average, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men in the US will experience domestic violence by an intimate partner during their lifetime. Domestic violence remains a pervasive public safety and public health issue that impacts individuals, families, and communities across all boundaries of race, religion, economic status, and ages.

Our Police Department, City Attorney’s Office, Prosecutor’s Office, and community advocacy organizations work together in partnership to provide a strong, victim-centered response to domestic violence crimes. And, in partnership with Our Sister’s House, we are the first city in Pierce County to implement the Danger Assessment for Law Enforcement (DA-LE), an assessment tool that helps us identify victims of Intimate Partner Violence most at risk for homicidal violence and provide them intensive services and interventions by a specialized team. Our Sister’s House provides support to victims of Domestic Violence and organizes our DV High Risk Team to bring together resources to support victims of Intimate Partner Violence who have been deemed to be at high risk.

That’s huge, and I’m very proud of our staff for making this happen.

Everyone should feel safe in their own homes with their own loved ones. We work to do our part as a city in October and all year long. What can you do? Don’t stay silent if you are a victim. You are not alone, and you are not to blame. If you think you know someone who may be a victim, don’t assume it’s just your imagination. Check our Domestic Violence Resources available on our website for more information and guidance. You also are not alone.

-Mayor Kathy Hayden

We are proud to share that Deputy Chief Andy McCurdy has graduated from the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety’s School of Police Staff and Command in Evanston, Illinois.

This 22-week program provides upper-level leadership and management education for law enforcement professionals. Coursework covers areas such as leadership, organizational behavior, human resources, budgeting, and policy development—all designed to strengthen strategic decision-making in police leadership which coincides with our department’s initiative to educate and train its officers to meet the demands of modern policing.

We’re excited to see how Deputy Chief McCurdy’s experience will enhance our department as well as the Sumner community.
