Tonight, Chief Moericke honored two Sumner residents with the Police Chief Commendation Award. Only 11 days apart in February, Terry Gemmell and Derek Konzelman each entered burning homes to save their elderly neighbors from danger. Gemmell responded to shouts of help on February 15 and after getting his elderly neighbor out, returned with a fire extinguisher to curb the flames before East Pierce arrived. Konzelman, a professional firefighter with Puget Sound Fire, was awakened by his wife in the middle of the night. Their neighbor’s house was fully engulfed in front, but Konzelman found a side door and entered to rescue the house’s resident. At the presentation, families of both women rescued joined in giving their own thanks and gratitude for the quick, life-saving actions of these Sumner residents.
