Sumner will take part in a regional lahar evacuation exercise on April 23, 2026, from 9 a.m. to noon. During the drill, local schools will practice evacuation procedures, and drivers should expect temporary road closures and delays, especially on Valley Avenue, Main Street, and 160th Street. The exercise is for students and faculty only, but it’s a good reminder for everyone to review emergency plans and know local evacuation routes.

Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week takes place April 12–18, recognizing the dedicated professionals who protect both people and animals in our community. From rescues and investigations to public education, their work is essential and often performed under challenging conditions. This week, we also celebrate our icredible animal control officers, animal care staff and our many volunteers at Metro Animal Shelter. Please join us in showing appreciation, and watch a special video message from Mayor Bowman honoring their service.
