Here are essential fireworks handling safety tips if you’re planning on celebrating with fireworks this 4th:

Before Lighting Fireworks
• Only buy legal fireworks only (check your state/city laws).
• Read instructions carefully and follow all warning labels.
• Designate a sober adult to be in charge of lighting.
• Keep a bucket of water and a fire extinguisher nearby.
• Wear safety glasses, tie back long hair, and avoid loose clothing.
While Using Fireworks
• Light fireworks one at a time and move back quickly.
• Never place any part of your body over a firework when lighting.
• Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks (“duds”).
• Use fireworks outdoors only, on a flat, nonflammable surface.
• Keep people and pets at a safe distance.
What NOT to Do
• Don’t allow children to handle or light fireworks.
• Never point or throw fireworks at people, animals, or property.
• Don’t carry fireworks in your pocket or shoot them from containers like bottles or cans.
• Avoid using fireworks under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
After Use
• Soak used fireworks in a bucket of water before throwing them away.
• Clean up all debris to prevent injuries or fires.
• Store unused fireworks in a cool, dry place away from children.
