According to a recent poll of our shelter dogs, here are the top 5 reasons why you should buy a pet license:

#1 – “It makes me look cool”
#2 – “It helps animal control officer know where my family lives if I get lost”
#3 – “I like that jingly noise it makes when I do my zoomies”
#4 – “It helps provide animal control officers to rescue me if I’m hurt or lost”
#5 – “It helps to provide for a safe place for lost pets to stay until they are reunited with their families”

And these pups are right – it significantly helps us to protect your pet and looks super cool! Not only is a pet license required in the municipal codes of the 7 cities we serve, it is also the right thing to do. By purchasing and renewing your pet licenses for a small fee, you are helping to provide animal control and sheltering services for your community. And you can do it online, so it’s quick and east!

UPDATE AT 10:48 AM: Valley Ave is back open completely. Houston Rd is still closed westbound, but open eastbound.

Valley Avenue East into Pierce County is closed (the one by the cemetery) in both directions from Cannery Way to 116th due to a fire in unincorporated Pierce County. If trying to get to or from Sumner on that route, use Houston Road or another route instead.

We also had someone decided this was a good time to hit one of our hydrants near Houston Rd. So, Valley Ave E AND Houston Rd are now closed west of Sumner Heights Drive. Avoid this area.

FYI on upcoming road closures of SR 167 for repair to the 3rd Ave SW bridge:

Permanent repairs begin Wednesday, Nov. 19
All lanes on northbound SR 167 will close from 11 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, to 5 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, while crews shift traffic and set a work zone to complete repairs. A signed detour will be in place.

Third Avenue SW will close starting Wednesday night, Nov. 19, and remain closed for the duration of this project. A signed detour will be in place.

Starting Thursday morning, Nov. 20, just the right lane will be open across the Third Avenue SW overpass. Delays and congestion are likely in the area, particularly during peak travel times.

Crews will use precision techniques to remove and replace the damaged girder then restore the bridge deck. Construction will continue into early 2026. Crews will work 24-7, including during holidays, until the bridge reopens.

During this lane reduction, people should plan ahead, allow extra travel time and consider using alternate routes.

*PET OF THE WEEK – AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION*

Double the fun! Double the snuggles! Double the love!!!!

Are you looking for a dynamic duo of kitties to join your family! Look no farther, because we are just the right fit for you!

Our names are Dash and Lily, and as a bonded pair of twins, we do EVERYTHING together. All of the staff and volunteers here at the shelter love to watch us play together, sleep together, eat together, snuggle together… yep, we are inseparable!

We came into the shelter back in September, after a nice lady found us wandering around the city of Puyallup looking for a safe place to stay. At the shelter we got cleaned up, had our vaccinations and our alterations done. After spending lots of playing with the volunteers, we are ready to be adopted together into a loving forever home.

So make a dash over to the Metro Animal Shelter in Puyallup to see us today! The shelter is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with “meet & greets” available from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

It seems Facebook removed our Veterans Day post yesterday, so we are trying again…

Today, we pause to honor all those who have served and sacrificed for our nation. Their courage, dedication, and commitment to protecting our freedoms inspire us every day.

We are especially proud to recognize the veterans among our own department – 45% of our commissioned officers are veterans. Their continued service to our community reflects the same strength, integrity, and leadership they showed in uniform.

To all veterans, past and present—thank you for your service and sacrifice. Your contributions make our city, and our country, stronger.
