The City of Sumner is preparing to replace the aging Stewart Road Bridge over the Stuck River. Built in 1936, the current bridge is structurally deficient, seismically vulnerable, load-restricted, and lacks adequate space for pedestrians and cyclists.

Key Project Highlights:

  • Purpose: Replace the existing functionally obsolete and structurally deficient bridge.
  • Benefits: The new bridge will enhance safety (seismic & structural), improve traffic flow, add sidewalks and bike lanes, remove load restrictions, and support economic development.
  • Status: Design is complete.
  • Timeline: Construction has started and is expected to be completed in 2027
  • Impact: A full bridge closure will be required during construction. Detours will be established, primarily using Traffic Avenue and Valley Ave E.
  • Funding: The project is funded by significant federal grants ($25M) along with state and local funds.
