On July 20-22, the City will be chip-sealing roads in Sumner including 16th Street, Academy Street, Parker Road, Willow Street and Rivergrove Drive. This process greatly extends the life of roadways for a fraction of the cost and inconvenience of repaving. However, it’s not without its own inconveniences. First, “chips,” a layer of small rocks, goes down on the existing roadway, likely mid-week. The contractor sweeps any loose chips the next day. Then, on July 27-28, the fog seal layer goes over the chips.

Often, in between the chip layer and the seal layer, drivers call the city, worried the road will be left looking like a “gravel” road. It won’t! The fog seal has to be done as a separate stage to work, and it will leave the road nice and smooth.

A street map of Sumner, Washington, titled '2026 Pavement Chip Seal Work Plan.' Heavy blue lines indicate planned maintenance on specific road segments. Major project areas include: 16th Street between 137th and 148th; Parker Road from 45th to Main Street; several blocks along Kincaid, Academy, and Park Streets; Valley Avenue between Washington and Main; and segments of 67th and 72nd near the Sumner-Riverside area. State Route 167 and State Route 410 are shown as major geographic boundaries but are not marked for chip sealing.
