After nearly two years of litigation, demolition of Sumner’s Ryan House is proceeding July 24-26. We thank the house for its service to our city and look forward to a park that continues to honor Lucy V. Ryan. More information: https://connects.sumnerwa.gov/ryan-house

Photos show the house from Main Street, early in 2025 and the structural issues discovered in 2023.

Due to a recent large influx of dogs, Metro Animal Shelter kennels are at capacity - so we need these awesome pups adopted as soon as possible! Metro's shelter serves 7 cities (Algona, Bonney Lake, Edgewood, Milton, Pacific, Puyallup and Sumner) so it is vital that they have kennels available to receive lost/stray dogs, abused or neglected dogs, and potentially dangerous dogs from these cities.

Metro Animal service's shelter in located in Puyallup, WA, near the South Hill Mall. We are open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

They also have tons of cats and kittens up for adoption too! See the full list of pets available for adoption by visiting their website at: https://metroanimalservices.org/search-pets/

A Home Town Homerun - a message from Mayor Hayden:

Nothing says small-town charm like a community softball game on a summer evening. And, we had a very special game held here in Sumner last week. The Titans are a local softball team for people of differing abilities that is coached by Retired Sumner PD Sergeant Matt Kurle. Last night, they played a team of local police officers, including Sumner’s own Rodney Allensworth, coached by Puyallup Chief Scott Engle (who also grew up in Sumner and was previously a Sumner PD Officer). I’m not even sure what the ending score was – I don’t know if anyone knew. The point is that everyone won, and not in that participation-trophy kind of way. You could feel the joy and the fun radiating from the field. The Titans and officers were having so much fun together. Softball skills may have improved a bit, but the joking, the laughter and even the smack-talk has come a long way, indicating a level of camaraderie you only get when you feel totally comfortable and are simply having a blast.

I’m proud our officers participated this year and in past years to keep developing this connection. It’s not a single example. Through their support of Special Olympics, Camp Possible, Badges and Boxing, Badges and Barbells and so much more, our officers continue to find ways to connect with people in the community, especially our youth, in different ways. You can learn more about these programs and how they’re supported outside taxpayer funding through the non-profit Police Activities League of Sumner.

Speaking of connections, National Night Out is coming up on Tuesday, August 5. We don’t hold a big event in Sumner because the point is to get you outside to know your neighbors better. It doesn’t have to be fancy—share some hot dogs, root beer floats or rhubarb pie and just chat. If you’d like police to stop by your party (in a good way), let us know. Email Lauren Wallin to get on the schedule. Use a summer night to try something new yourself; get more comfortable with your neighbors and police. It’s a simple step to increase your block’s safety with the camaraderie and comfort that works so well in Sumner.

A message from the City:

After the last two hot days, our water levels remain lower than we'd like. With cooler weather ahead this weekend, we hope they recover, and we'd like your help to get us there. Please follow a few simple steps to reduce your water use this weekend.

You Should
• Take showers instead of baths & use the 4-minute playlist to time your shower.
• Run wash, laundry and dishes, only when loads are full.
• Reuse water when possible i.e. buckets in showers to water plants.
• Suspend watering the lawn this weekend.
• Wash cars on lawns.
• Sweep driveways/sidewalks instead of wash.

We Will
• Increase leak detection & repair.
• Reduce watering in parks.
• Suspend system maintenance that uses a lot of water.
• Limit hydrant use to fires only.

For more tips, visit the EPA’s WaterSense program at https://www.epa.gov/watersense/start-saving. Hopefully, these steps will help us avoid further watering restrictions later.

Thank you and have a good weekend!

Look at us! We are the cutest litter of kittens that are ready to be adopted, after our buddies at the shelter made sure that all of our shots were done and our spay/neuters were complete.

Back in April, our mom was living out on the streets of Puyallup when all of us kittens were born. A nice lady brought us into her home, and lovingly cared for us as a foster until we were old enough to be adopted out of the shelter to our forever homes. Our foster was so amazing, she even adopted our mom! ...Now we are 3 months old, happy and healthy, and at the shelter awaiting adoption. We are the best mix of snuggly, playful, curious, and silly -- so you are sure to find a perfect match! Come visit us Tuesday through Saturday at the Metro Animal Shelter in the City of Puyallup.
