Celebrating Sumner’s Unsung Heroes – a message from Mayor Hayden:

Tuesday night was the 29th annual Community Summit, and it was a great night. Thank you to Communities for Families for organizing this event and Calvary Community Church for hosting us once again. We had a great break-out session, hearing what’s working in Sumner, what could be better and what we can do to make it better. One participant mentioned under “what’s working” how he loves sessions like this and then seeing the results of what people say happening in the community afterward. That’s fantastic to hear!

The thing is, it’s not really about us as the City. During dinner, the event honored our community’s Unsung Heroes. Included in that was our own Deputy Police Chief Andy McCurdy. Although he does wonderful work here, he was also honored for his leadership in officer wellness efforts, safety and emergency preparedness, for his fitness program with high school students and, with his wife, leading Camp Possible summer camp for blind children. No question, Andy (and DeMarie) are rock stars in our community beyond his “day job,” here at the City. The other Unsung Heroes honored were Brian Doherty, Paula Hemminger, Eric Pilcher, Paul Smith, Fenet Guyassa, Ilee Lewis and Cooper Miller. Their stories for work they do in Sumner and Bonney Lake were inspiring.

The point, though, is that for every person honored, there are 100s of others who we don’t even know. In your jobs, from your home or just walking down the street, you do countless tiny things each day, maybe smile or wave at someone, that build community. Thank you for that.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run® (LETR) is the largest public awareness vehicle and grass-roots fundraiser for Special Olympics. Known honorably as Guardians of the Flame®, law enforcement members and Special Olympics athletes carry the Flame of Hope into the Opening Ceremony of local competitions, and into Special Olympics State, Provincial, National, Regional and World Games. Annually, more than 97,000 dedicated and compassionate law enforcement members carry the Flame of Hope, symbolizing courage and celebration of diversity uniting communities around the globe.

The LETR for Special Olympics engages law enforcement worldwide championing acceptance and inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities, starting first with their own communities. Over the years, the Torch Run has evolved and now encompasses a variety of innovative fundraising platforms to include Plane Pulls, Polar Plunges, Tip-A-Cops and more. Since its inception, LETR has raised more than half a billion dollars and changed millions of attitudes worldwide.

Special Olympics Washington is proud of the dedicated law enforcement personnel from all over the state who are committed to raising thousands of dollars for our athletes and increasing public awareness to our Program. Nearly 2,000 law enforcement personnel are involved in Washington State LETR efforts and raise over half a million dollars annual for local programs.
