Our online utility bill pay system is currently down. The software vendor is looking into the issue. In the meantime, we will not proceed with shut-offs as scheduled for 2/28/23 and will update the timeline when the system returns. You can still pay by credit card, check or cash at City Hall.

Like you, we prepare each winter for snow. Sometimes we get “Snowmageddon” and sometimes snow predictions just “flake out.” Either way, it’s better to be prepared. Keep in mind a few things about winter weather in Sumner.

Roads & Sidewalks

  • We lay down de-icer before the roads freeze. We use our own mixture of water and salt that we prepare in advance.
  • The plow map shows what roads we plow and in what order. We actually do not plow residential streets because plowing creates “dams” of snow along the side–usually blocking in driveways, making it harder for you to get out.
  • Sidewalks are your thing. They always have been, and that hasn’t changed. We take care of sidewalks adjacent to public facilities (City Hall, parks), but we can’t shovel every sidewalk in Sumner.

Staying Warm at Home

  • If you’re home, take a few extra steps to keep your pipes from freezing. If your pipes freeze, call Shops right away at 253-299-5740 to shut off your water at the meter for you. Too many residents panic and try to shut off their meter themselves, usually breaking the meter and adding even more costs to the situation.
  • Our own Metro Animal Services reminds you to take extra care of pets too. Bring your pets inside and make sure they have a warm place to sleep at night. Don’t leave your pets unattended in a cold car. Watch out for cold-weather chemicals, such as antifreeze and ice-melters, that can be problematic for pets. Remember to thoroughly dry pets after bathing them and consider lessening the frequency of your pets’ grooming appointments; their longer fur will help them stay warmer.

Needing Shelter

  • If you don’t have a home or lose power, you can get warm by visiting the Gordon Family YMCA (member or not). Another option is the Sumner Pierce County Library.
  • If you or someone you know needs to find a shelter, this is an updated, comprehensive list from the Tacoma-Pierce County Coalition to End Homelessness. You may also call South Sound 211 to request help finding services, although their call center is only open during the day, Monday-Friday.
  • For transportation to the Shelter, please call 253-883-1513 or 253-921-3063. If you are unable to reach someone on the first number, try the second one. These contact numbers should be operational at any time, day or night, until the morning of 1/16/24 .
