Our online utility bill pay system is currently down. The software vendor is looking into the issue. In the meantime, we will not proceed with shut-offs as scheduled for 2/28/23 and will update the timeline when the system returns. You can still pay by credit card, check or cash at City Hall.

We are an accredited law enforcement agency, which means we follow the highest standards for law enforcement. Our greatest asset as a department is our officers and support staff. They understand the importance of what they do and have a strong sense of duty and pride when it comes to protecting and serving you. Click here for a full message from Chief Moericke.

Practicing for the Lahar in Sumner, a message from Mayor Hayden:

Things will be a little different in Sumner on March 21. In the morning, we’ll be partnering with the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District and a lot of other agencies to conduct a big drill for a lahar evacuation. What’s a lahar? My very non-technical answer is that a lahar happens when Mt. Rainier erupts, bringing a “river” of mud into our valley that will not be pleasant. Now I’m hearing that a lahar can even happen without an eruption. You’ll want the much more technical answer from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Their scientists will be at Puyallup’s Library next Monday, March 18, 5-7 pm, providing that information way better than I ever could.

Back to March 21st: since we know lahars are a risk, we do what we can to prepare. That’s why Pierce County tests their lahar sirens on the first Monday of every month. And that’s why on March 21, we’ll test what it’s like to evacuate every school in the valley. It won’t be easy, and it will affect traffic. In Sumner, the drill will impact our main routes, particularly Valley Avenue, 160th Avenue as well as Main Street and Meade McCumber Road between Valley and 160th. I would avoid those areas that morning, or if you have an appointment or business, plan on being rerouted with delays estimated at about 20 minutes to get to your destination. We know this is an imposition, but we believe it’s worth it every two years to learn what we can about ways to improve getting our students out as fast as possible.

While this drill only involves students, it’s also a good reminder for all of us to think about how prepared we are for a lahar or any emergency within our own home and family. Use the link below to learn more about the drill and tips to prepare for any emergency. I’m thinking it would be just my luck for something that happens once in thousands of years to happen during my term. Then again, I’m sure Mayor Pugh felt that way about a global pandemic, so we continue to drill, prepare and plan! Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

Sumner PD Officers recently attended Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) training at Ridge Motorsports Park in Shelton. This training was organized and taught by Metro EVOC, which is a collaborative group of trainers from agencies from all over Pierce county. Officers received training on high speed and pursuit driving, pursuit intervention tactics, and vehicle skills/placement. Our goal is to reduce risk to the public and our officers by focusing our hands-on training efforts on high-risk/low-frequency skills like pursuit driving, so that officers are prepared to make better decisions under stress.
